Orlando
We know there are many reasons why people go to Florida - the theme parks, the sunshine, the white sandy beaches, the friendly locals, the delicious food, the shopping - the list is endless!

Orlando, once a quiet farming town now attracts more than 25 million visitors a year. The main reason for this is of course Walt Disney World, which, along with Universal Studios, Sea World and a host of themed attractions. Despite enormous expansion, the town itself remains free of the commercialism that surrounds it. Mickey Mouse and many other fun characters have turned Orlando into the fourth-ranking US destination for overseas travellers, after Miami, Los Angeles and New York City.

Orlando is unquestionably the king of theme parks and a land of fantasy worlds. Days, or even weeks can be spent enjoying the many magical and thrilling parks surrounding Orlando. Orlando is central to a variety of holiday opportunities, in addition to the theme parks, which is what most people associate Orlando with, there are other nearby interests and activities.

Daytona Beach is less than 60 miles northeast of Orlando and has a world famous 23 mile beach, much of which can still be driven on with cars, motorcycles and a variety of rental vehicles. Of course Daytona Beach is also home to Daytona International Speedway where many NASCAR and other high profile motor-racing events are held including the Daytona 500.

America's space port known as the Kennedy Space Centre and Cape Canaveral is located about 50 miles east. NASA's Kennedy Space Centre offers many presentations, displays and tours of space program's past, present and planned future. There are also various rockets are on display.

For those interested in culture and history there are several museums and performing arts centres in and around Orlando. Within the city of Orlando is Church Street Station, a premier evening entertainment complex. This eight-square block area is reminiscent of the early 1900's with its brick-paved streets, gas-lit street lights, and yesteryear architecture. Church Street Station is an entertainment and shopping complex featuring live music and dancing shows including rock and roll, Dixieland jazz, country-and-western, and a Cancan show. Street performers add to the festive atmosphere.

Most of the theme parks and attractions are located just south of Orlando where there is an unbelievable concentration of hotels, restaurants, entertainment and shopping complexes. Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Sea World, Discovery Cove and Wet-n-Wild are located relatively close to International Drive and just a bit further is the Walt Disney World complex (the same size as Greater Manchester). International Drive has a number of smaller attractions and entertainment venues. Wonder Works, a three-story, upside down attraction is an "amusement park for the mind", featuring 100 interactive exhibits including a simulated earth quake. Ripley's Believe it Or Not Odditorium exhibits uncanny and amazing collection of oddities.

Weather in Orlando

Florida is a year round destination due to its warm weather.

January is the coolest month buy by UK standards it is not cold at all, a low of 10oC (50oF) and a high of 22oC. The spring temperatures in Florida are in the upper 80's and possible lows of 50's. There is plenty of sunshine but spring showers are common. You are still able to wear shorts and light clothing for the day and sweaters for cooler evenings. The summer months of June to September are the rainiest months but temperatures can be in the 90's. July and August are very hot and humid with highs of around 33oC (90oF). Thunderstorms are possible in the late afternoon but usually last no more than an hour and can be refreshing. One must be wary however since thunderstorms can become quite severe with very strong winds and intense lightning. October to December still offer plenty of Florida sunshine with highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's. This is ideal weather for those who don't want the extreme heat of the summer.

Although snow is rare in Florida, tropical storms and hurricanes are not. Hurricane season is from the 1st of June through to 30th of November. However modern surveillance systems provide plenty of notice of approaching hurricanes.

Please note even though the rainfall seems high in July and August these are normally short showers that dry quickly and can sometimes be refreshing.

Beaches

Florida has some of the best beaches in the world therefore a holiday to Florida would not be complete without at least a day trip to the beach. Florida has some 1200 miles of coastline nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Orlando is in central Florida half way between the two. There are several beaches within a 90 minute drive of the Orlando area. If you don't fancy a few hours driving there are plenty of swimming pools and man-made beaches in some of the water parks around Orlando. Most beaches have seasonal lifeguards, covered picnic areas, toilets/showers, hire shops, children's play areas and beach volleyball nets. Refreshments are normally found within a short walking distance but it is a good idea to bring an ice box to save some money and for your own convenience. The beach is the perfect place to provide the kids with hours of fun all without spending lots of money. A cheap bucket and spade or rubber ring can keep them entertained whilst you sit back and relax in the warm sunshine. One important thing to remember is sun tan lotion as the Florida sun can be intense even in the winter months.

Cocoa Beach and Melbourne Beach are located to the east and about a two hour drive. Both provide some nice sand, surf and little tourists. Cocoa Beach is close to the Kennedy Space Centre and home to the world famous Ron Jon Surf Shop. Ron Jon Surf Shop offers everything from surfboards to kids' toys and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. South of Cocoa Beach is some lovely beach towns along with Melbourne's Sebastian Inlet State Park as known as "Surf City". Surf City draws big crowds with surfers showing off their skills to fascinated onlookers.

To the west of Orlando you will find Clearwater Beach, close to Tampa and an ideal place for a twin centre. Why not spend one week visiting the theme parks and the second week relaxing by the beach. Clearwater tends to attract a lot more tourists due to its great sandy beach with warm and calm waters, which is ideal for the family and has lot of amenities.

Atlantic bottled nosed dolphins can be spotted in the ocean and rivers throughout the year. In January and February you may even be lucky enough to spot an endangered whale as it migrates along the coast.

Attractions of the Area

MAGIC KINDGOM
Magic Kingdom was opened in October 1971 and in general based on the layout and attractions at Disneyland Park in California. It was and is the most famous Florida theme park and is credited with beginning the tourism boom in Florida. The park is made up of seven themed lands from past to the future including Adventureland, Mickey's Toonfair and Tomorrowland all of which offer attractions mainly for the youngsters. The Walt Disney World Railroad runs along the edge of the park and stopping at Main Street, Frontierland, and Mickey's Toontown Fair for those who would like to take a ride or have a rest. On top of all the attractions there are a number of shows, shops and restaurants to visit, don't miss the firework show above Cinderella Castle or enjoy an ice cream at Plaza Ice Cream Parlour on Main Street USA.

Something not many people realise when they are visiting Magic Kingdom is the vast amount of tunnels underneath the park that allow staff (dressed in costume) to move around without visitors seeing them. The reason for this is kids wouldn't be able to understand why a Frontierland cowboy would be walking through Tomorrowland or Indian Jones would be spotted on Main Street USA.

Opening hours vary depending on the time of the year and change frequently, it is always best to check times before you make plans. Saturdays can be particularly busy with locals visiting Magic Kingdom, this park has more actual rides than any of the other Disney parks. There are bonuses available for guests staying at any Disney hotels as they get to enter the park on some days earlier than general visitors.

EPCOT
Epcot was the second theme park opened 11 years after Magic Kingdom and took 3 years to complete. Unlike Magic Kingdom the tunnels underneath the park or not used for staff moving around the park. The park is generally thought of as the learning park as there are only 3 rides and the rest of the park is made up of shows and exciting walk throughs.

Epcot is spilt into two sections, the first called Future World which is made up of futuristic attractions, amazing demonstrations and lots of interaction. Drop in for an interactive animated chat with Crush, Nemo's pal or imagine what an astronaut feels like when they are on a spaceship at Mission SPACE.

World Showcase makes up the other half of Epcot and as the name suggests gives visitors an idea of what life is like in eleven different countries across the globe. Enter an Aztec pyramid in Mexico to discover a typical marketplace full of local fare, speak with one of many Norwegian men and women in traditional costume who work in and around the typical Norwegian village. Watch some of the Chinese acrobats who perform regularly during the day within the Chinese courtyard decorated with ponds and crossed with bridges or imagine what it would be like to visit the Oktoberfest in Germany by visiting The Biergarten for a bite to eat. The Italy Pavilion consists of Venetian and Roman architecture, statues and street performers whilst the United States has a more Colonial style feel. Japan is known for its amazing buildings and you will not be dissapointed there. Characters from Aladdin are often spotted within the Moroccan city where you will be entertained with tradional Arabian rythms. The France Pavillion was based on Paris and even has a view of the Eiffel Tower, where as if you are feel a bit home sick and want to visit a replica of an English village then United Kingdom is the place for you, a Beatles tribue band often perform daily. Last but not least is Canada, which is designed to remind visitors of the great outdoors show casing a waterfall, gardens and pools.

World Showcase is the ideal way to visit 11 countries in one day, where you can try traditional food, buy typical specialties and chat with the people from all around the world (each Pavillion employs staff from the mentioned countries). For the children there are a number of stations that they can stop at around the World Showcase where they can partake in various activites, they collect a stamp for everyone completed. You will often find that World Showcase does not open until later in the morning and Future World clsoing earlier to enable to save on costs. Like in Magic Kindgom there is a nightly firework display that takes place over the lagoon and last for 13 minutes - another one not to be missed!

DISNEY'S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS
Disney's Hollywood Studios was designed to delight and thrill audiences by giving then the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes along with all of the excitement and intrigue of the movies. The park is a combination of high adrenaline rides, scintillating shows and specials effects in a much smaller space than the other Disney parks making it easier to see everything in one day. A series of highly orchestrated stunts are performed throughout the park including Lights, Motor, Action Extreme Stunt Show where you will see engines revving, tires screeching and amazing stunts.

There is a mixture of rides available if you are looking for fun for the little ones try Honey I Shrunk The Kids Movie Set where you will get a taste of what life would be like from a bug's perspective. For the more thrilling rides try The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror which is only for the brave or zoom from 0-60 miles per hour on the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith.

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular and Playhouse Disney - Live on Stage are just some of the live entertainment that can be found throughout the park. Disney's Hollywood Studios is entertains all the family modelling its attractions on Disney movies and TV whilst educating everyone with pioneering exhibits and rides that teach.

Fantasmic is the most elaborate night time Disney park production ever. The outdoor amphititheater seats 6,500 people, even though this sounds like a lot of seats it is filled most nights (weather permitting). Beloved Disney characters perform during a colourful pyrotechnic explosion of lights, lasers, dancing fountains synchronised to the melodies of Disney classics and special effects.

ANIMAL KINGDOM
Kids of all ages love animals therefore Animal Kingdom is a place you must visit. The park itself is the largest of all the Disney parks and spans 500 acres. Animal Kingdom opened in April 1998 and is made up of 5 lands all unique in their own way. Like in most Disney parks there is a centrepiece to help getting round the park easier. The Tree of Life can be seen from any part of the park, if you look closely you will see some of the 325 images of birds, mammals and insects carved into its trunk.

Disney's Animal Kingdom is not your average park nor a typical zoo but a magical mixture of the two. It is covered with flourishing landscape, twisting paths, exquisite gardens, mysterious architecture and educational exhibits. Disney prides itself on enabling guests to see and in some cases interact with a variety of unusual animals, many of which won't be found behind bars. On top of the animals and attractions there are plenty of shows, exhibitions, restaurants (mainly fast food) and shops to entertain every visitor. Some of the 'not to be missed' shows include Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade, Festival of the Lion King, Tarzan Rocks and Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends containing some of Disneys' much loved characters.

Huge crowds can gather in the park so it is best to try and arrive as early as possible especially on the cooler days. Doing this there is a higher chance of seeing more animals on the Kilimanjaro Safari where you will explore the wildlife reserve in open sided lorries. Antelope, rhinos, hippos, zebras, crocodiles, baboons and elephants are just some of the animals you can feast your eyes on whilst enjoying the views. Older children and adults are most likely to enjoy and appreciate the true environmental and biological aspects of the park although there is something enjoyable for everybody.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS
Universal Studios promises to offer more excitement per square foot than anywhere else. Universal still haven't finished with their plans, they still have 2,000 acres that they plan to develop at least two additional theme parks and more resorts. They have got a long way to go before they even get close to catching up Disney but have established themselves as a strong player within the attractions market. Whilst they battle it out it is the customers that reap the benefits, whether it is better value for money or greater variety and choice of attractions.

Universal Studios is the largest working film and television production studio outside of Hollywood. Whilst actors and actresses are busy filming visitors can enjoy the amazing array of rides, shows, movie sets and attractions. Like most of the parks Universal Studios is divided up into 6 zones, all of which amuse the family. Production Central, New York, San Francisco/Amity, World Expo, Woody Woodpeckers KidZone and Hollywood are the names of the zones which all contain incredible shows and awesome attractions.

Guests get the chance to take a peek at the behind the scenes secrets, see how make up artists create amazing special effects in the Universal Horror Make Up Show or experience an authentic 8.3 quake in a San Francisco subway station by simulation. It is important to make sure you have enough time to visit the most popular and exhilarating attractions, it is probably best to start with these as queues may be long depending on the time of day and year. Join Princess Fiona and friends from both movies on her honeymoon adventure with Shrek in a 3-D film with special effects. Revenge of the Mummy is a psychological ride which plunges you into total darkness with fireballs, beetles and mummies for company. Ever wonder what JAWS looks like, well now you can find out, take a ride on a boat just waiting for that well known music. Then suddenly a fin appears and you are left face to face with the mighty shark. Compete against your family and friend s to see who can zap the most aliens in Men in Black. This interactive ride has multiple endings ensuring that no ride is ever the same. Universal Studios has something for the whole family but Woody Woodpeckers KidZone is full of adventures for the youngsters. Watch Barney perform live on stage, let them run wild in Fivels playground, or if they are feeling particularly daring the let them wide Woody Woodpeckers Nuthouse Coaster. This will give them an introduction to the exhilarating world of roller coasters. If you have never made it to Los Angeles but have always wondered what it is like then Universal Studios shows you a snapshot. Landmark buildings such as Hotel Beverly Hills line the streets of Hollywood Boulevard. Universal imitates the glitz and glamour of Hollywood plus names some of your favourite stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Shows are performed all through the day at scheduled times, it is generally best to check times when entering the park. Street Breaks is performed in the street by very talented dancers, showing off their break-dance moves. The Blues Brothers like to get the crowd involved whilst singing the blues in the street.

ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE
Islands of Adventure is best known for its high speed roller coasters and heart pumping movie themed attractions. The park is spilt into five different themed islands: The Lost Continent, Jurassic Park, Suess Landing, Toon Lagoon and Marvel Superheroes, all of which surround the lagoon in the middle of the park. Islands of Adventure is made up of thrill rides, superb shows and mouth watering restaurants. There are some water rides which will ensure you don't leave them dry.

A number of rides have height restrictions which usually mean they require daring guests to ride them. Teens will love them and be in their element however there is plenty for the youngsters too. Universal prides itself on the themes and special effects which make this park a brilliant mix of myth, technology, fantasy and fiction. Some of the well known spine-tingling rides include: The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman - a 3-D ride which has you jumping from building and dodging flaming pumpkins. Duelling Dragons and The Hulk are the fast and fantastic roller coasters. The Hulk launches you from 0 to 40mph in 2 seconds and Duelling Dragons soars 125 feet in the air at 55mph narrowly passing each other. If you are looking for a monster water ride then don't miss Jurassic Park River Adventure, a leisurely raft ride until something goes wrong leaving you face to face with a massive T-Rex. Toon Lagoon is by far the wettest island where all your favourite cartoon characters live, be prepared to get soaked but luckily the sun is normally shining so you will dry off quickly. The little ones will be mesmerised by Suess Landing which is a multi coloured pastel painted island containing many magical rides from Caro-Seuss-el to High in the Sky Suess Trolley Train Ride. There are a number of play areas to crawl and climb around (for the children that is), these will keep the toddlers amused whilst their older siblings brave the big rides. Some of them are strategically placed close to the big rides to make life easier. There is also room for learning at the Jurassic Discovery Centre, learn all about dinosaurs from life size replicas to interactive games.

SEAWORLD
SeaWorld is one of the world's most popular marine life parks. It is not only full of a multitude of family-friendly shows, rides and attractions but also provides education, animal protection, research and conservation all in an entertaining and fun way. The park is an excellent choice for both adults and children.

As you can guess from its name the park has a heavy emphasis on sea and water related attractions. Some of the amazing shows that can be seen at SeaWorld include Blue Horizons - an action packed Broadway show in water combining acrobatic performers, dolphins and whales. Believe - showcasing Shamu the killer whale in awe-inspiring choreography along with some very talented acrobats. Other spectacular and awesome shows for all the family include: Pets Ahoy!, Odyssea, Clyde & Seamore and the night time show Mystify. It is always best to find out show times as soon as you enter the park and plan your day around these. Always remember seats fill up fast so use this time to have a rest and get there early.

SeaWorld has some great shows but that is not all, it is home to Kracken - SeaWorld's monster roller coaster. Once you get on this floor less roller coaster you will be sent through seven upside down loops at 635 miles per hour. Be prepared to get drenched when you ride Journey to Atlantis, this one of a kind attraction combines a roller coaster with a water ride. As you will get wet it may be best to leave it to the end of the day or bring a spare set of clothes.

For the little ones there is Shamu Happy Harbour, here they can ride the killer whale themed rollercoaster, waterspout themed teacups or the jelly fish themed tower ride. If adults want a rest whilst the kids are entertained then just take them to the sea themed children's area. Here they can play and make new friends on the 4 storey netted gym, tunnels, mazes and slides.

Whether you want to interact with the animals or just watch at a safe distance, you won't be able to contain the delight you will experience at SeaWorld.

DISCOVERY COVE
Discovery Cove costs a little bit more than the other theme parks but for what is included it is worth it. To get the best value for money it is advisable to arrive early. The park doesn't tend to get crowded as they limit the number of guests to 1,000 per day. Because of this and its popularity it is recommended to book well in advance, especially during peak times. The park is set in a secluded and natural tropical setting, once inside it is hard to believe that the hustle and bustle of Orlando is just outside.

Practically everything is included in the price you pay, although there are two options to choose from depending on whether you wish to swim with the dolphins. Parking, breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages, snorkel gear, wet suits, towels, lockers and beach chairs are all included in the price. Children of all ages are admitted to the park however they must be 6 or above to swim with the dolphins. The main attractions of Discovery Cove is the dolphin swim which is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You get the chance to kiss, hug, talk, touch, play and swim with the gentle and extremely friendly bottlenose dolphins. You will join a group of 6-8 guests allowing you to interact personally.

There are plenty of other attractions to keep the whole family entertained. Snorkel or swim through expansive colourful reefs, shipwreck remains, enchanting grottos where giant rays and thousands of exotic and tropical fish swim around. Relax and unwind after lunch in the Tropical River or resort pool. Stroll through dense rainforest, swim in the clear blue sparkling water or enjoy a massage from the pounding waterfalls. The Ray Lagoon gives guests the opportunity to submerge in a secluded lagoon with surprising gentle rays. For a rest from the water why not try the Aviary, here you will find more then 30 species of birds that you can talk, touch and feed. Discovery Cove along with SeaWorld prides itself on offering a personal experience to all guests whilst ensuring the well being of all animals. Using their years of experience they do there best to educate all guests about the amazing creatures.

BUSCH GARDENS
Busch Gardens is located outside of Orlando in Tampa Bay but is still within Florida. It is a big favourite with all ages as it includes more roller coasters than any other park in Florida (at present anyway!). Furthermore the park has a combination of animal encounters and a dazzling selection of performances. It is only classed as crowded on very few days of the year, meaning you often get to go on your favourite attractions more then once without queuing for ages. Like with most large theme parks it is highly recommended to arrive early, firstly to make sure you get to see and do everything but also so that you can get on the popular rides before the queues start to grow.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay opened its door in 1959, since then it has been known around the world for its diverse array of experiences all located in one place. The African themed park gives you the opportunity to ride some of the tallest and craziest roller coasters, enjoy live shows and get up close with the animals on a life like African safari. Animals come first at Busch Gardens, it is a zoo before a theme park. They are a leader in preserving endangered African animals even providing them with replicas of their natural environment.

The highlight of Busch Gardens is the Serengeti Safari Tour, here you can watch African wildlife such as lions, hippopotami, zebras, hyenas, gorillas, baboons, Nile crocodiles and much more. This experience can only be described as second best to the real thing.

Once you have been amazed by the fascinating assortment of wild animals you can then spend the rest of the day on board exciting white knuckle rides, watching a show or stopping for a bite to eat.

Sheikra is the highest and fastest roller coaster plunging you straight down at 90 degrees whilst Kumba sends you on a topsy turvey ride hitting loops at 60mph. Land of Dragons and Lory Landing is the best place for the youngsters where they can enjoy lots of child friendly rides and shows or enter the domed habitat to observe brilliantly coloured birds free flying around. If you need a bit of cooling off then you can try Congo River Rapids or Tinganyika Tidalwave. Both names are a give away of how wet you will get facing waterfalls, geysers and tidal waves, although spectators end up worse off on the latter!

Pirates 4-D is a swashbuckling adventure combining the latest specials effects technology and comical pirates. KaTonga on the other hand is a 35 minute musical celebration of animal folklore. Performers bring to mind traditional African stones that mesmerize and entertain with a mix of lively music, impressive dance and masterful puppets.

WET 'N' WILD
Located on International Drive is Wet 'N' Wild, the most exciting water park in Orlando.. It has even been voted as the number one water park in America. The main emphasis of the park is on multi-person and thrill rides. However kids can have just as much fun on miniature versions of the adult rides, along with playing in the safe playground. Life guards keep a constant eye on all guests to ensure they have a safe and water filled fun time.

There are numerous rides that satisfy any mood. If you are looking for a bit of excitement you can try Bomb Bay - step inside a capsule like bomb and wait, only for the floor to disappear from beneath you onto a 76 foot high virtually vertical slide. The storm sends you swirling and whirling through tubes where you end up being dropped into a giant open bowl. If you want to share your experiences with friends there are a number of rides which include Flyer, Disco H20, The Black Hole or Bubba Tub, all of which offer very different experiences. The sun is shining and you just want to relax then why not try Lazy River. Here you can leisurely float along enjoying the Florida sunshine. A 17,000 square foot wave pool with a powerful wave machine provides fun for the entire family.

For the more adventurous there is Wake Zone Cableway, where you can see if you are a novice or a natural at wake boarding - remember it is not for everyone.

Shopping

Orlando may be the theme park capital of the world but believe it or not, shopping is the number one activity of visitors to the area. The main tourist areas have a staggering range of shops and stores.

There are bargains galore to be found any day of the year but you will find even more savings by stocking up on certain items during specific months of the year. January is one of the best times of the year to shop. The sale racks are full of winter clothing, shoes and outerwear. Perfume, lingerie and jewellery is especially cheap during February due to Valentine's Day. The spring fashions that made their preview in January and February tend to be marked down to make room for the summer lines. Then during June and July the summer clothes and shoes have to make way for the autumn fashions. It is all a vicious circle that benefits the shoppers, the idea is just to know the right time to shop. Every year in late July/early August the state of Florida offers a tax free shopping week to assist families with back to school expenses. The added bonus is you don't have to be a resident to take advantage of the savings. If you want to learn more visit the Florida Department of Revenue web site. During October shops need to make space for the heavier winter goods and as a result the autumn stock is discounted. If you can hold out until November to buy your winter coat you may find prices have really dropped. During Thanksgiving weekend you will find the following goods highly discounted: decorative holiday items, toys and electronics. Sales during December are very intermittent, the closer you wait to Christmas the more bargains you will find on toys, winter clothes and gifts.

Getting Around

Travelling around Florida is generally hassle-free due to the fact that Florida has a very well organised and regular transport system. However travel and transport options in Orlando are somewhat limited when compared to other U.S cities. Fortunately this does not seem to be too much of a hindrance as the transport modes that are provided cover all routes and travel choices.

If you are staying at a hotel many of them offer a free shuttle service to the bigger theme parks, which can save you a fare bit of money. Most of the hotels will offer complimentary transport to Universal Studios, Sea World and Wet 'N' Wild but very few offer it to Disney. Those that do offer transportation to Disney can often be unreliable or share with other hotels resulting in a long journey stopping at numerous hotels. Guests staying in Disney accommodation have free use of the Disney buses, ferries, and monorails.

There are many options provided to visitors for getting around Orlando.

CAR
A car is a necessity if you want to zoom around Orlando. Driving within the city of Orlando can be tricky: most streets are one-way and ticket-happy meter maids lie in wait. However, if you want to do any travelling outside of Orlando you'll need a car. Major highway networks into Florida and throughout the state make it easy to get to Orlando from other destinations.

'Fly Drive' packages are extremely popular with visitors to Orlando. The reason visitors choose this type of holiday is very simple. It is widely known that renting a vehicle is a vital necessity in order to make the most out of all the attractions that Orlando has to offer. It is therefore a much more convenient and cheaper option.

Even with a car getting around town will take longer than you think. This is especially true on I-4, which can turn into a parking lot at certain times of day, Bumper to bumper driving is quite common and should be expected. Within the town driving conditions are much more laid back and driving in town is consequently a calmer and pleasant experience. Visitors driving a car should allow some additional time for 'sitting' and a good map is essential before any timesaving short cuts are attempted. Parking in the tourist areas is generally not a problem as most attractions have vast car parks. Parking in tourist areas and attractions is problem free and very simple. This is due to the fact that the majority of attractions have spacious car parks that are well organised and safe. It can work out costly so it is advisable to try and visit more than one park in the same day as your ticket can be used at a different park (as long as it is the same company, for example any Disney park). However this gives you the option to go back to your hotel or villa for dinner and still return to a park for the nightly firework displays.

Hiring a car can have some advantages and disadvantages, please see below some that you might want to bear in mind when making your decision.

Advantages include:
-The ability to take a break from the theme parks and pop to a water park or for some shopping. It can work out quite expensive if you need to rely on taxis.
-You can visit the surrounding area of Orlando, take a trip to the beach or visit one of the numerous attractions. Taking excursions can work out very expensive especially on top of the money paid for the theme park tickets.
-You can also work to your own schedule instead of having to wait for shuttles or buses. Journey times can be very long due to making lots of stops.
-Petrol is a lot cheaper than in the UK and can work out very inexpensive especially if there is a large group of you.

Disadvantages include:
-No stress of driving in a foreign country, however due to the wide roads it is recognised as an easy place to drive on the opposite side of the road.
-Not been able to drink if you are the designated driver, however most of the time you will be so knackered after a busy day at the theme parks and shopping centres a good meal and bed is all you will be looking forward to! Most hotels have either bars or restaurants within the complex or within walking distance.
-Savings on not hiring a car, public transport is extremely cheap and a reliable way of getting around.

TRAM
Orlando does not have a Tram service available to the Public, however a number of parks do operate a tram service within their grounds.

The I·Ride Trolley company offers exclusive, convenient and affordable transportation to hundreds of exciting destinations between Sea World and Universal Studios which are at opposite ends of International Drive, along with some great shopping locations. The I-Ride is dedicated solely for tourists, air conditioned and the capacity to hold two wheelchair positions.

The I-Ride trolley service operates roughly every 15 minutes so you will never have long to wait and is available daily from 7am to midnight. A one way journey will cost you 0.75 cents but $1 is accepted, no change will be given. Unlimited ride passes can be purchased from most shops and hotels but not available on board. They range from 1 day to 14 day passes, the more days you buy the bigger the saving.

Once on the bus you're in for a treat as many of the bus drivers love to entertain the passengers with a running commentary.

TAXIS
You can catch cabs around if that's your style, but you'll have to call one on your mobile since taxis ignore kerb hailing - no matter how frantic. Visitors are advised to book taxis by telephone ahead of travel requirements. Orlando has an extensive number of taxi services available that can be utilized for short or long distance trips. Taxis are the best way to get around at night - try Yellow Cab Co. (tel 407/699-9999).
If you are heading to a theme park from your hotel ask for the fare when you call a cab as set rates often apply.

BUS
Orlando runs a highly efficient, friendly and inexpensive city bus system, including a free downtown circuit. The free Lymmo bus service provides convenient transportation in and around downtown Orlando. You can pick up schedules and route maps at the Lynx Bus Centre, which is one block east of Orange Ave.

Lots of brightly decorated buses can be seen travelling along the roads of Orlando most advertising shows and theme parks. These are known as the Lynx bus system which reaches throughout the attraction areas as well as downtown Orlando and favourite neighbourhoods. To get to the Disney parks you can catch buses (route #50) from the Lynx Bus Centre, but it's a somewhat patchy service and a long ride. Another popular route for British tourists is route #7 which takes you to Orange Ave/Florida Mall.

All trips on Lynx buses cost $1 but no change is available so always try and make sure you keep some dollar bills in your purse or wallet. If you need to catch more than one bus you can buy a transfer ticket for an extra 10 cents. You need to let the driver know when you first board the bus otherwise you will end up paying twice.

The Lynx bus stops are not quite as easy to spot and it's not always clear where you can catch the bus. A pink circle marks the Lynx bus stops with a pink paw print in it.

The Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (Lynx) operates cheap and convenient transport running from the airport and throughout the town, while a number of private companies run services that travel in and around the popular tourist areas.

Mears Transportation Service runs private shuttle buses between the main accommodation areas, the airport and Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios but tends to be more expensive than local transport. It is best to phone at least a day ahead to ensure you will be picked up especially during peak times.

There are good bus connections from Orlando to all the major cities in Florida; unfortunately, the bus station is in the middle of nowhere out on Highway 423. The cab ride in to town can be expensive so remember this when you are trying to weigh up your options on what is the best way to travel

If you want to visit Busch Gardens but don't have the luxury of a car there is the Busch Gardens Shuttle Express. It costs $10 per person return or is complimentary for people that have purchased a 5 Park Flex-Ticket.

TRAIN
Amtrak runs direct services from Orlando to Miami, Gainesville and points to the north. The Amtrak station is 1.6km (1mi) south of Central Orlando. There is no cross town rail service in Orlando; however, Amtrak operates travel services from various external destinations to its own Orlando station, as well as offering connecting shuttles to Orlando-area hotels and attractions. Orlando is easily accessible by the Amtrak rail system both via passenger trains and auto trains.

Aiguille Rock Climbing Centre, Inc. in Longwood is a rock climbing facility catering for climbers of all levels and even has training classes for those who've never undertaken the muscle-enhancing, morale-boosting sport.

Golfing is very popular in Florida. It is estimated that there are over 1,000 public, private and semiprivate courses in Florida. Florida has more golf courses than any other states in America.

Get back to nature by horseback-riding along scenic trails, canoeing or kayaking past grazing manatees and alligators, gliding over a slice of the Everglades on an airboat or taking a sea excursion off one of our pristine coasts. You can even go cruising on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle or fly a glider or vintage aircraft.

Florida an ideal state for most water based activities including diving, snorkelling, fishing, jet-skiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, wakeboarding, knee-boarding, wake-skating, water skiing, swimming or parasailing due to its warm summers and mild winters. There are more than 300 named lakes, rivers and springs in very picturesque areas that offer water sports facilities both for beginners and pros.

Surf's up at the Ron Jon Surf Park, opening in early 2007. The facility, located at Festival Bay Mall at International Drive, already home to Ron Jon Surf Shop, will consist of three wave pools developed for surfers (or wannabes) with all levels of experience. The largest pool is for intermediate to pro-level surfers and will create four-to-eight-foot (one- to two-meter) waves and have ride lengths from 60 to 100 yards (55 to 91 meters). The smaller training pool is for beginner and novice wave riders and will have three-to-four-foot (1 to 3 meter) waves. There's also a special boogie boarding pool if you're not quite ready to surf.

For activities involving surf (the real thing) such as surf boarding, body surfing and wave boarding the east coast is a better choice as it has higher surf than the west coast. The water along the west coast of Florida is warmer than that of the Atlantic coast. Here the water remains at a comfortable swimming temperature. Excellent snorkelling and diving can be found down south in The Keys where the water clarity and colour rivals that of many Caribbean islands.

For those who prefer spectator sports, Florida has many professional sports venues in a number of major metropolitan areas.

For the diehard sports enthusiast you can cheer on the NBA's Orlando Magic, the city's professional basketball team. The season begins in September and finishes in May. The team play at the TD Waterhouse Centre.

Orlando is also home to several exciting college football traditions-the Capital One Bowl, Champs Sports Bowl and the Walt Disney World Florida Classic. Orlando's closest team in the National Football League is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The season runs September to December. College games draw almost as many fans as the NFL matches.

As the official spring training grounds for 18 major leagues teams, Florida from February through March is the place to watch your favourite players warm up for the summer season. Visiting teams also meet in friendly games in the so-called Grapefruit League, which draws big crowds.

For the Family

Orlando is commonly described as one of the most family friendly destination in the world. It would be amazing if you're unable to find something for the whole family from kids to grandparents. Most of the attractions are centred on children of all ages and are detailed more in the Top 10 Attractions section above along with sections on shopping and eating out. However there are many attractions and forms of entertainment specifically aimed at families.

With so much to do parents can often forget about one of kids' favourite pastimes - swimming. If you are staying in a hotel or villa this activity is free of charge. After a long day at the theme parks, shopping or sightseeing there's no better way to unwind then to immerse yourself in cool, liquid relaxation. Swimming will definitely assist in tiring out the children to make it easy to get them to bed in the evening, especially so their batteries are full re-charged for the following day.

Some of the hotels have some truly magnificent pool areas with large pools, waterfalls, waterslides and lagoons. Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, Hard Rock Hotel (Universal Orlando Resort), Nickelodeon Family Suites and Royal Pacific Resort are some of the most impressive and entertaining. Hard Rock Hotel has a rock and roll themed pool with an underwater audio system where as The Lagoon at Nickelodeon Family Suites has climbing nets and a 400 gallon dump tank.

Disney has two very diverse water parks, entrance is often included when you buy your tickets to the Disney theme parks. Blizzard Beach is modelled on a rapidly melting ski resort and includes chair lifts, ski jumps, slopes, free falling slides and floats. You can test your nerve at one of the world's highest free fall slides called Summit Plummet or race one another on the Slush Gusher. Typhoon Lagoon is based on a huge storm and a ship stranded high on a mountain by a giant wave. The 56 acre area has a wave pool spanning the entire length of the lagoon and sends out 4 foot surf waves every few minutes. On top of that there are twisting tides, roaring rapids, wonderful waterways and relaxing rivers. These are ideal places to visit if you want a day off or like to have a splash around in the afternoon sun after a hectic morning at the parks. Wet 'n' Wild is another popular water park voted America's number one water park and is detailed more in the Top 10 attractions section above.

In the evenings there are an abundance of family friendly restaurants serving a hot hearty meal just like you would get at home. Prices tend to me quite cheap due to the large amount of variety and competition. If entertainment is what you are looking for there are some terrific dinner shows whose aim is to provide a memorable evening. Pirate's Dinner Adventure, Arabian Nights, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede Dinner Show, Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament all offer very distinctive and enjoyable evenings for the whole family. Pirate's Dinner Adventure is acclaimed as "the world's most unique interactive dinner show." Guests are entertained with an astonishing display of special effects wizardry, aerial artistry, swashbuckling swordplay, dynamic duels and daring-do; a classic story of good vs. evil that offers the perfect blend of action, adventure, comedy and romance; the opportunity to interact in the adventure; and a sumptuous dining experience. Arabian Nights is a dinner show that brings a fairy tale to life on horseback, you are invited to celebrate the wedding of a Prince and Princess. Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede is a fun-filled, action-packed Dinner and Show extravaganza for everyone. At the Dixie Stampede, each ticket includes a special Carriage Room Opening Act, the thrilling Main Show in the beautiful Arena and a mouth-watering four-course dinner complete with a delicious dessert. Guests cheer for their favourite jousting knight at Medieval Times Dinner. Experience the adventure and romance of the Middle Ages, watch the knights battle for honour whilst eating a royal feast served in a traditional manner.

An ideal holiday is giving everyone the chance to do what they want, most of the time it comes down to compromise but with help at hand is doesn't have too. Kid's Nite Out (1-800 696-8105) and All About Kids (1-800 728-6506)have realised that parents sometimes want some time together, would like to have a night out on the town or need a helping hand at the theme parks. They both offer professional carer who will play games, read books and bring toys aimed at all ages. They also have helpers who will assist at the theme parks allowing mum and dad to go on the adult rides together. Equipment can be hired including buggies, car seats, cots, etc.

The Kids Crew program is available at Reunion Resort and Club gives parents up to 4 hours free time to do as they please whilst knowing the kids are looked after and entertained. Kids can take a cooking class, take the stage in an acting class or splish and splash in a waterworks class. This unique program is ideal as it was designed by kids of kids.

Hurricane Information
Below is some important information you will need to know in the event of a hurricane

Hurricanes are known to occur in Florida, mainly around the months of June to December, although most of them are generally minor.

When the threat of a hurricane occurs you should follow certain precautions. A few of these include gathering specific supplies such as water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit and any important medications. It is a good idea to turn off all electricity if possible.

During a hurricane you should stay inside away from any windows or glass doors. You should stay in a safe room on the lower ground floor away from anything sharp or electrical. Do not under any circumstances go outside while the storm is still going and only go out after if you are 100% sure it is safe. You will need to be aware of the eye of the storm as it may seem like the storm is over for a short period but it will not be.

After a hurricane do not touch any broken or low hanging wires. Do not go near any water that has wires/electricity nearby and only use phones for emergencies. Look out for weakened or broken roads, buildings and trees.
